Our Mission

Move The World Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit private foundation.

Our mission is multi-pronged:

1. Raise awareness of the strong connection between developing quantitative skills and economic opportunity, especially for disadvantaged youth and ‘early generation’ Americans, and help improve those skills in a variety of ways

2. Enhance college & career readiness, especially in the Gateway or Working Cities around Boston

3. Identify and strengthen synergies between the many good organizations already working on these frontiers and broaden those others whose missions are more general to better understand the powerful real world impact of more effectively delivering on all these objectives

4. Broaden those whose missions are more general to better understand the powerful real world impact of more effectively delivering on all these objectives

5. Improve lives, especially of students and families, to give them a chance to realize their goals, better their life circumstances more broadly, and participate in society

Archimedes was famous for saying that with a large enough lever and a solid fulcrum, he could ‘move the world’ and we drew our name from this idea, hoping in some ways, we can be a small part of making the world a better place. We might think of the lever as economic opportunity where a small movement in the right direction can build on itself while the fulcrum is symbolically the solid foundation of a good STEaM (Science, Technology, Engineering, arts and Math) education. The goal is figuratively to ‘move the world’ – expand economic opportunities and generate momentum and feedback that can improve lives for multiple generations. We are trying to give that lever an extra push.

We encourage non-profit organizations in the Greater Boston area – especially those expanding to Gateway Cities with some focus on STEaM-related programs – to contact us and share their successes, needs and philosophies.

About Us

Move The World Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit private foundation created in 2011. Tom Pappas, the foundation’s founder, grew up in Lynn, MA, a blue-collar city north of Boston and attended Tufts University, working his way through college, while majoring in Economics and Computational (ie. Applied) Math. Growing up in a bilingual household, he was the first in his family to graduate from college. He then received an MBA from MIT’s Sloan School with a concentration in Finance and became a successful investor at Wellington Management.

Tom looks back on his career fortunate enough to have had quantitative skills that were cultivated and the opportunity to apply them – hence the mission of Move The World Foundation to give others, especially lower-income or ‘early generation’ Americans, similar opportunities and guidance to hone and explore their own skill-sets. In fact, the foundation leans on its Greek-American immigrant heritage for its natural enthusiasm and name selection (the ancient Greek scientist Archimedes was known to have said “With a large enough lever and a solid fulcrum, I can move the world!“) While organizations we support need to be “E cubed” – Effective, Efficient and Enthusiastic – there is a special focus on groups that will help students build on quantitative skills, expand STEaM (Science, Technology, Engineering, arts and Math) education, and connect skills with economic opportunities in the Boston area, especially in the Gateway or Working Cities.

Over time, we continue to evolve, adding more trustees and thinking about additional ways we can support these communities so that we can better serve to improve the lives of those around us.
